Khasiat susu ibu.

Ok... I have plenty to write but very little motivation ;P so, I'll just leave you with this cute video I took of little jj just last night while I was busy in the kitchen, cooking.

I wonder if you have ever seen such a sight from another 14-month old baby... I am not sure if you could view it clearly because if you don't, let me just give you some heads up. This would be something you'd see at a water cooler station - where you'd press for the water to shoot up while you open your mouth wide for the water to shoot straight into it. But lo and behold... this is no water cooler... instead, it's water being squirted from a baby's bottle ;P

I've seen this done once before but little jj wasn't successful in getting the water into her mouth. And every time she'd do this with her NUK bottle, I would quickly take it away from her as she would get soaked from the water.

Tonight, she got away with it since I was busy cooking and it was close to her bath time. And lucky me, this time I had my mobile with me since the one was coming home late from work and he'd always call before he reaches home. Thus, I was able to capture it on my Nokia N86 8MP :D

Hehe... did you manage to see the water being squeezed into her mouth?

When I showed it to the one, he was truly surprised... imagine that there is a much easier way to drink up and we wonder how she ever learnt this trick. For me, I'd definitely say that the 'noti'ness came from daddy's side ;P

It got me to thinking about those times when I'd take away the bottle from her immediately when I knew she was going to squeeze water out from the teat... and this time when I didn't. Imagine that you'd stop your baby from doing something (within certain boundaries) only because it will make your life more difficult - the cleaning... the mess, etc. Since it is only plain water and doesn't leave any serious mess to the floor/furniture, I guess no harm would come from it... and how good it was to see a baby being creative when you allow them to explore their senses, eh?

I must sell this idea as an advertisement... no need for those milk with DHA or taurine or whatnots... this would be a perfect ad for susu cap gantung! haha... nurturing creativity and thinking out of the box :D

P/S: A quick update - Little jj didn't make it to the 20 semi-finalists of Johnson's Baby of the Year 2009 because J&J didn't think little jj is cute enough. Do you know that the semi-finalists all need to display some sort of talent for them to win? Now, don't tell me that this squirting-of-the-water is one talent all babies have... *in the i'm-a-parent-and-my-baby-is-the-winner mode* Boo Johnson's.

P/P/S: I'm little jj's parent and is allowed to say these things on behalf of her nyehnyeh... ;P

In LoVe

The first day of fasting came and went quite well... I am happy to be able to fast on the first day successfully although I was a little bit worried earlier since I am still breastfeeding the baby - I mean, I am not worried about the hungry part but more for the thirsty part. But, I was feeling a little guilty as I didn't fast the entire month last year, partly because I just came out of confinement and believed that the baby needed a good flow of wholesome mummy's milk. I really do not want to miss an entire month this year and decided to just give it a go today... after all, I could always break fast if ever I do feel lethargic or extremely thirsty.

Anyways, I had a good meet with my very dear friend, Nicole, this afternoon. It was meant to be a lunch date until the one reminded me that harlow... puasa laaa... hehe. So, I quickly text-ed my gorgeous girlfriend that lunch has got to be cancelled at our usual gorgeous hangout and to be replaced with a good shopping destination so that we could still hangout and chat.

And oh, what a really good shopping session it was... it has really been quite awhile since we both went for serious shopping together. Usually it would just be lunch and window-shopping in BSC, where there are a limited number of shops and items you could buy, apart from the pharmacy, grocery store and book store that we would frequent to. And... in the process of buying this and that, I was politely told by the cashier in Guardian that she thought I was Chinese haha... that reminds me of the question I posed to the one, if in case I did proceed to having lunch in public with Nicole, no one would even suspect me as a Malay now, would they? ;P

I've always loved to shop with Nicole because we'd both encourage each other to spend haha... and we both love to see each other looking gorgeous. We even had a 10 to 15-minute drama down at the Nine West section of Isetan, admiring a lovely handbag at 50% discount. It was truly funny, if you were there to bear witness. But as much as I thought the bag looked pretty, I do believe I already have plenty (more so, the one would definitely raise an eyebrow with the so many bags I already own hehe...). I managed to put the bag back on the rack but I knew Nicole couldn't stand to see the last piece being displayed and grabbed the bag for herself. I do think that the sales girl was so relieved that we finally took the bag after hogging on to it in front of the mirror for ages!

I managed to get a nice gift for my cousin who just gave birth and although that was my only shopping plan, what truly caught me by surprise was this awesome deal... feast your eyes (only for Bobbi Brown's fan)...

this sleek compact is yours FOC with any 3 refill purchase - offer only until 31 August 2009!

bobbi brown open - Share on Ovi
this was definitely a steal!

There are 4 slots available but since I couldn't make up my mind which eye-shadow colour is best, I was happy to have chosen a lip colour-quad, one lip gloss pan, and a blusher (the lip colours pans come with a plastic attached cover so that you don't get any access powder (from the blusher or eye-shadow) on them. You can even choose a foundation pan to be slotted into the compact.

But but but... what truly caught our eyes was the sight of this little girl, I managed to capture on my N86 8MP... can you see what we saw??... look carefully :)

girl with lv bag - Share on Ovi

Okay... the girl in the above picture was just awesome... she could very well be mistaken as a midget.. Of course, we both could see how obvious that she was just a little girl, probably barely 4 years old. I could very well capture her on video but was afraid if I'd get sued for stalking the little wonder.

See, if you had seen what I saw - what instantly caught my attention was the LV tote she had on her, held so tightly wherever she went... mind you, it wasn't a fake bag - that we could so tell. Her mom looked like a model and she was with another friend, both also wearing LV bags. But I wasn't admiring their bags at all... it was her that amazed me. It was the way she held her bag, with the handle rested on her arm, ala Victoria Beckham and many other glamourous celebs. And since there were the two of us, being cheeky felt easy ;P so, while pretending to check out Guess shoes, this was the photo that I managed to take on the active little girl.

That wasn't all... when they were done shopping at the shoes section, she demurely took out her sunglasses and put it on as if she was a true experienced pro! :D

I dunno... partly, I felt bad for her because she shouldn't be subjected like an adult... heck, she should truly enjoy being a kid but then again, this could also be a kiddy thing for her - playing adult. Oh well, it was surely a wonderful sight for me because a scene like this is so rare unless when you're watching Channel E and they show you what Suri Cruise or Zara/Shiloh Pitt are wearing.

Hehe...

Want to be famous?

Ok... it has been a tiring tiring month so far, with the one and the baby taking turns to get sick, infecting me in the process and to top it all up, little jj got the chicken pox, which was very frustrating since she was just 2 weeks away from getting vaccinated. Nevertheless, I truly felt grateful as I realised that I shouldn't have questioned the benefits of breastmilk from the beginning since she didn't get any fever prior to the chicken pox... the only fever she got was triggered by the strong anti-viral medication she was taking, which was too much for her system and inducing vomitting after every feed, total loss of appetite for solids and hence, loss of weight.

In all those ruckus, I managed to slot assignments in between with the latest project requiring me to travel heavily. The only best part was that I was in control of the travel schedule and was given the authority to determine places the photographer and I, would visit. Thus, everything was in order. However, due to the many events happening almost simultaneously, this tough cookie may have crumbled a little from the stress.

And, if you must know, little jj has fully recovered and is back to being cheerful again. Yeayy!

Anyway, I am called to write on something that was sent to me and I hope I won't get my friend in trouble for touching on this topic. Sorry, I just can't help it....

See, I was tagged in a message in facebook by a friend on an opportunity to become a telco's 'ambassador' for their latest 'hot' device (trust me, I tried googling for the right adjective to the device and none are really an accurate description). 20 'ambassadors' will be selected for a video shoot where you will be talking on what you like about the device and which application is your favourite. That is not the only highlight for the invitation - for one, you must already be a registered user of that device with their special package and that's not all... for a highly reputable organisation that makes billions of Ringgit a year, the remuneration for any selected 'ambassador' is a surprise gift worth RM100... very contradicting don't you think?? - That you are an 'affluent' group who could afford those small luxuries yet be rewarded with something of such inferior value for the service you provide for them. Yeahhh... talking about their package IS a service for them, as you are basically helping them to promote what they are selling.

My question is, do they really know the true meaning of the word, Ambassador? Or are they just playing with an exaggerated meaning of the word, Testimonial?

Yet, they banked on the possible chance to anyone who is interested on becoming 'famous'. Aha... I should be an English teacher, right?

Like, can you be famous simply by a video shoot? Heck, it is not even a TV commercial. So, how is it do you think a person can be famous? Might as well they hire new actresses/actors who badly need an exposure.

No, seriously. This is a frank observation.

When I was working in the insurance industry back then, one big boss wanted me to organise a press conference. When I went to him to get further details on what I should shout about to the media, he said, we would have a pool of fund worth RM100,000 for any policy holders plagued by SARS. Being a responsible PR person, I went to my boss and voiced my honest concern as I didn't believe in the campaign. I mean, how can a company who's a member of a huge conglomerate who makes billions and billions of dollars a year would simply put aside such minute chunk of money for a SARS fund, a worrying epidemic at that time. With that point, we voiced it out to the CEO and he immediately upped the total to RM1million instead. We had a blast with the media for being the first responsible insurance company to come up with such good news.

In this instance with the above-mentioned telco, I thought the invitation was highly insincere and really proves to all of their lack of consideration for their subscribers and highly manipulative as well. Of course, if you are condoning this for a short exposure of possible fame, that is really up to you. For me, being a former subscriber who once thought of the telco as the best in the country, I am once again disappointed by such lame move.

I mean, before writing this, I did some homework on the telco and am thoroughly surprised that there are way too many negativity being written on this once highly-regarded brand. I had even made the one convert from his telco to this just so we could enjoy the family package and smooth network. But, you might have read before what happened and how frustrating it was with their customer service, making the one having the veto power to convert me to his former telco. I must say, that was a move that was truly helpful especially since I was able to keep my cari makan number.

You know that ad on TV earlier this year where a comedian had those first 3 digits on his t-shirt and the ad stating that those numbers are now on another telco? I believe that claim had the statistics to substantiate their declaration. I mean, with the one's family members alone, with 14 of us mobile users (inclusive of son-in-law and daughter-in-law), 4 of us have already converted to another telco, originally users of this above-mentioned telco. If family members alone shows such big statistics (it could be larger if my parents-in-law would use their phones not just for calls and smses), I am sure this telco should worry of their dwindling numbers. Of course, I believe they still have a big share among the younger market due to their cool prepaid branding and their 'it' factor, very important among teenagers and youths to relate to the brand. Still, I do believe another younger telco is slowly eating that share.

And I find it really amusing that they are still harping on that regional success that they achieved 3 years ago. Can I get the statistics of where they were listed 2 years ago? What about last year? This year?

Come on lah... come up with something that can redeem your self-worth. Hire some really responsible people, and listen to your customers' opinion.

This campaign is considered a very important tool for them since they need to display how their customers are very happy with what they are offering. So, is that the only best reward you can give to your happy customers?

But, as much as it sounds truly lame to me, I do not own such device and I probably do not understand the hu-ha that comes with owning it. Heck, who knows, them users are probably even happy to do it for free! Hehe...

Well, I am just writing out my thoughts.

You're so vain...

I was into my mother cat mode again just awhile ago, trying to scare this one person who commented that a photo of little jj the one posted on his facebook page, looked ‘weird’. Heck no… I was just joking la and thank god that woman took it as a joke as well hehe…

Well, in cases like this, I wouldn’t just point my finger on the person who ‘seem’ to write comments that are directed a little towards the negative side, but I would also think that the one shouldn’t be posting any pictures without looking at the entire details and angle first… I mean, if he wanted to post a photo of little jj, do pick one that she’d look so adorable in it.

Yeah, yeah… him being him, he’d say that little jj looks adorable in ALL the photos hehe… daddy and his little girl… what else can I say.

Anyway, that is not the point. The point that I wanted to write in the first place is regarding things that are written here and how some people would take it.

See, I had posted one entry previously and the one pointed out one paragraph that may hit some sour notes in some people he knows. When I heard that, I quickly replied that it was a general statement and I know other people who does the same thing. I mean, come on… the majority of us would brush our teeth first before we bathe in the morning while some others would bathe before they brush their teeth – a simple example of similar things people go thru in a day.

I was blunt to point out to him that he shouldn’t be thinking of other people’s feelings when some people obviously did not even bother about his feelings.

I may sound like a broken record but I have always told the one that he is too nice of a guy… too nice that sometimes, people would just take him for granted, do whatever they like and expect him to be just a-okay with everything, forgive and forget. Yes, I know this is a noble trait and yeay, I got myself a really great guy. But, being there before myself, like more than 10 years ago, I’d hate it when he is treated as if he’s not important enough in an ‘important-enough’ friendship now, at a mature age of 30, with people acting so immaturely expecting him to suck it up maturely.

You think I am over-reacting? Well… I know someone who reacted even worse when something really small sorta plagued her husband. This is like how the Malay saying goes, ‘Cubit paha kiri, paha kanan terasa sakit juga’.

As a naturally protective person, I don’t think I am over-reacting. I am just concerned that the people I love don’t get hurt. Still, I believe life is full of wonderful experiences… one will go thru certain things before one sees something else in front of him/her. Life is forever a learning process.

And this is how it has always been in my blog. For those who has been reading me especially since I started blogging in 2005, you’d be familiar how I’d write things that matters to me and I’d express it in a way where it is like a reminder to me on how fragile life is. How fragile love is.

Sometimes, something will happen to someone else or even myself, and things that had happened to me even 10 years back will bring back intense feelings and I’d write it down. I think many people have written in to me on how much they could relate to many of the things I’ve written. I even have one request to put her story down in writing just so that others do not make the same mistake she did... but I never did write about it because I need to feel, in order to write since it will always come from the heart.

Talking about relating to things, I even felt so close to what the one wrote even before we met each other since he sorta wrote similar things that happened to me in the past as well. But I guess… those things evoke positive feelings to appear inside of me, for him, unlike that short para that I wrote which may bring about another bout of volcano eruptions with more exclamation marks to add.

I love him… and so, even with much objections to what he think will be perceived by some people, I took the paragraph out without much hesitation. I guess that showed respect.

I still think he deserved much more respect than what was given to him and I really think some people don’t deserve him, as a friend. Of course, I don’t think they’re such bad people but I guess, the environment, success and ignorance, change many people.

Oh… there I go again… expressing my deepest thoughts.

I can’t help feeling disappointed about what happened but that doesn’t mean that I would keep dwelling on it. I have so many other things happening in my life and I really do not have time for nonsense. Furthermore, they're not my friends to begin with. My only concern is the well-being of the people I love.

Therefore, I’d just like to reiterate the reason I write in here. As my blog title goes – I Shall Not Stop Writing. Especially not when I feel so strongly about something. It has always been that way since the first day I started blogging. Sometimes, you could even read similar stuff because that is how I feel at that point of time and it doesn’t mean that I am directing it to a specific person.

So… if in the future, there will be some topics or paragraph that may hit some nerves in some people, they are just a personal view of my surroundings and what I feel about it which would probably be just coincidental with what you may have gone thru. You can take it in a positive way or whichever way you like, I leave it to you because this blog wasn’t really intended to invoke love or hate to another… This is my space and I shall pen whatever I feel just like how many would just write whatever they feel in their space. At least, I put a lot of thought into what I write and not because I want drama in my life. Well, that, despite me being a drama queen at times (ahahhh...) ;)

Ahhh… with this finally thrown off my shoulders, I can now keep writing without putting serious limitations on my thoughts.

Now, to focus on other positive aspects… like the trip to Jakarta & Bandung in another few hours… Will update soon.

My pride and joy.

People say, being a SAHM is like a maid without pay. Well, I wouldn't want to comment much on that since I am a WAHM.

Part of the perks of being at home 24/7 with the baby not only allows me the flexibility of time to manage work and household matters but most importantly, I am able to see first-hand, new developments and habits of my little one.

The past couple of weeks have been full with new developments and habits... gosh... to all others out there, if you're thinking of questioning 24/7-at-home mommies regarding what they understand about their babies, do not second guess them. It's like they understand foreign (baby) language and any weird sounds you hear actually make so much sense to them... they all have meanings and all are significant.

Anyways... after that attempt to say, 'mama' I posted 2 weeks ago, she has succeeded in pronouncing it accurately just 2 days after that first attempt. The only thing was, she used it whenever she needed anything. So, she'd call her brother mama and she'd say the word freely, not fully intending to call me. However, as of today, I do believe she fully understands that mama means mummy. Still, I do wonder what happened to papa or daddy. We have yet to see her call for her dad although she has said the word, daddy, so many times months ago.

3 days ago, she produced a playful sound by sticking her tongue in and out of her mouth. All those times, I failed to capture it on camera as she'd only do it for a while and as soon as the camera starts rolling, she would just sit pretty, all prim and proper. I noticed that she would do that most of the time, whenever she knew I was going to capture whatever she was doing on video.

But, this morning, I managed to capture that with much coaxing from the little munchkin. Oh... that sweet brother and sister bond...

Anyway, the highlight of the day must be the fact that she has finally 'crawled' after 10 months. I said it as 'crawled' in inverted commas due to the fact that it didn't look that much of a crawl as she didn't quite lift her butt up and at times she was pulling herself to move ;)

In fact, I saw her do that when I heard her calling 'mama' after waking up from her morning nap and she was almost in a front-crawl swimming position, trying to reach for her toy... making it look so much like an attempt to crawl.

See baby, I told you there's nothing for you to worry about.

Well, the one came home from a 2-day forum yesterday and shared with me his concern about our baby not being able to crawl when his friend's 9-month old baby has gone 'everywhere'. This, coming from a man who did tell me before that he didn't even crawl when he was a baby. Apparently, he skipped that phase and learnt to walk instead.

So, I don't get it when he comes home and feel pressured with this issue just because someone else's baby has already done it... As I told him yesterday, why do we want to start comparing things we don't have against what others' have.

As I mentioned to the one, instead of comparing her to what his friend's baby has managed to do, why can't he make comparisons to what their baby couldn't and our baby can? For example - before little jj crawled, she has a smart way of reaching for her toys, like pulling on the comforter or bed sheet so that the toy is pulled towards her. Or the fact that she could sit up straight when she was 5 months, something that not many other babies could do at that age. Heck, she sits up straight unlike many of us adults who slouch and many friends and relatives have pointed it to us before of how sturdy and stable her body looks with that sitting posture.

Yeah, I'm in my 'mother cat' mode again. And am very protective of whatever comparisons and pressure anyone puts on me or my growing baby or even those people I truly care about.

Every baby develops differently and as much as I am eager to see her take that first step, I believe she still has room for development. Many has said that crawling is not really a necessity and if she does follow her dad, she would be standing up and walk without learning to crawl. With her staying put all these while was a chance for me to be a little ignorant about things we have within her reach. Now that she has started to move about like she did today, I have this throbbing headache and I feel far more tired than usual as I startle everytime I see her holding something that's not her toy, and putting them into her mouth.

mommy, i want to go shopping... let's see what ikea has, eh??

You know how they say you'd start to realise something when something else is gone? Now that she has started to crawl, I can no longer sit still... I need to look at her every 3 seconds and I keep running thru things in my head especially on that earlier plan I had to replace the tv cabinet we inherited from the original apartment owner and the fact that I have to keep reminding everyone at home to make sure no one leaves anything harmful on the floor or within her reach. I hate being this sticky but this is what needs to be done when you have a crawling toddler.

But, I do enjoy witnessing her little little stuff when she starts to do new things. Like right now, I can see that her legs are positioned differently when she sits... instead of both legs spread apart to stabilise her body, one leg now is folded towards her whiles the other one is folded outwards. When she gets uncomfortable, she just spread those legs again like she usually does. It's truly amazing to be able to mention all these little details everytime the one comes home from work... and pointing out every single detail of what she needs and why she's doing certain things.

I am foreseeing a little bit of stress in time to come from her moving about... all because of this compelling need to enhance the neatness and cleanliness of the house, and be alert at all times with what she'd do next. Whatever it is, I am letting her take her time to progress on her own... there's no point worrying about things which will gradually take place. Until I have reasons to worry, I shall not.

So nooowww you know how it feels...

Part of the perks of being a blogger is not only meeting my one true love (ehehh…) but I also got the chance of taking part in a half-day session of cabin crew training.

Now, which one of you ladies have never ever dreamt of being a flight stewardess when you were younger? I believe so many of us have that dream at least for one small minute… I know I did… especially those days when I was young-er (I’m still young!) when the airport was based in Subang… those cabin crew were scattered all over PJ and I would always catch a glimpse of groups of smartly-attired, uniform-clad cabin crew in their MAS vans transporting them to and from Subang Airport.

I never really re-visit that dream once my height stopped at 150cm, plus that sudden drive and belief that I would make a good (and glamorous) medical doctor ☺

Anyways, it all started with a boring and long night, anticipating the arrival of my the one to return from London when I decided to finally click on that icon on facebook. It links to the Malaysia Airlines Travel page and I decided to be one of its fans.

They had a contest running and it was pretty simple – to just complete the sentence – no slogans required and nothing additional to purchase in relation to the contest. I didn’t give it much hoot and read what others’ wrote. The contest was open only to bloggers and 10 will be picked as winners. Originality is key and I suddenly realised that there is one thing I had always wanted to learn from looking at them female flight stewardess. Thus, I wrote, “I want to attend MAS cabin crew training because I've always wanted to know how the ladies don their sanggul... it looks so simple yet I have always failed in making my hair look that smooth and professionally done :D”.

The next day, after returning home from picking up the one at the airport, I clicked on the page to show him what I had done and was surprised to note that I was picked as a winner…

So, there I was… attending the session with much hopes, although nothing much could be learnt from that half-day training in comparison to those actual months of training. What do I expect, right... it's not as if we were all getting certs :) but at least I'd know how it feels like for a cabin crew to go through the training programme.

What I instantly noticed upon arriving at the Malaysia Airlines Academy was the fact that all of us bloggers were treated like journalists… anyone in the communications industry would agree how special journalists are usually treated. And I guess, from those years of so many parties telling the corporate sector to take bloggers seriously as they are perceived as ‘new-age reporters’, Malaysia Airlines is probably one of them who has taken the first step to recognise bloggers as part of their branding, CR and media relations activity.

We were warmly greeted by a big group of people from the airline, mainly those from the Media Relations department, Training and their PR consultant. That was when I realised how serious they think of us bloggers…

Mr Gunalan led the briefing at the start of the programme and Tengku Evelyn then elaborated on the seriousness of Cabin Crew Training. After that, we were brought to a grooming class where it was already filled with attractive new recruits. My hopes to learn to do the bun the MAS-flight stewardess way dashed out the door when I realised that it isn’t as easy as one thinks. A cabin crew goes thru a 4-day grooming training when we were only allotted a good one hour for grooming and deportment.

i was impressed with the new recruits as they look so pretty.

The main highlight was letting us know how important make up is to a flight stewardess, as made perfectly clear by the external consultant as she picked out a fresh face to be transformed into a glam babe. I was afraid seeing how thick the make up was on the consultant's face but surprisingly, she did a really good job on Elena. In fact, albeit her thick make up on, she looked really good in photos.

fresh-faced Elena, before the make-over...

step-by-step explanation while the bloggers go wild with their shutters ;)

tadaaaa... see how make up could brighten up a person's already sweet face...

- all 3 pictures were taken from the Malaysia Airlines Travel page

I guess the flight stewardess all need specific type of long-wearing make-up as they need to maintain a clean, matte complexion so that they look fresh and sweet at all times despite working under cabin pressure where us ladies are always advised to wear minimal make-up to prevent from clogged pores and foundation turning cakey.

Despite not being able to learn to do the 'sanggul', I still managed to get my hair done ;P with specific instruction to only do a style that doesn’t make me look extra chubby (ahaks!).

The deportment class was even more interesting as my eyes wander the entire room… they had complete props – dining table and chairs, sofa and even a runway with mirrors all around the room.

stand-up straight, chin up, good posture... and walk.

The eye-opener would be attending their first aid class and safety training. We managed to catch those going for their refresher course, at a time when the trainer was going into specifics on a medical condition. Like, you think those flight attendants would only stand pretty and serve you meals… you are dead wrong. I was damn impressed… especially seeing them with dummy babies, trying to revive and help an infant from choking. That struck a chord in me as I couldn’t imagine what to do (*touch wood*) if that were to happen to my baby. It – was – scary.

check for breathing/source of choking/etc.

revive position, when unconscious (and after any hazardous material
already exited air way)...

blow oxygen into infant (and i can clearly hear air entering dummy lungs)...

walahhh... the infant actually coos happily when it regains consciousness ;D

As for safety training, I must say that I have a safety passport which will expire in another year… and I went for the basic first aid training and offshore safety training about 2 years ago but I hardly remember the specifics until my memory was refreshed when I saw the requirements for their safety training.

we all had a go at the slide for our mock evacuation.

i remember this formation - small circle where everyone is mighty close
to each other to keep each other warm and prevent excessive lethargy;
larger circle at the sight of an airplane flying over to attract attention. am i right?

i also remember that you should only inflate the life jacket after you've exited the plane...

- photo of formation and life jacket taken from Khairul Sufi's collection on facebook

My point is, this half-a-day opportunity made me see that the career of a cabin crew shouldn’t be taken lightly… you see them pretty, you see them only serving you meals only because nothing eventful ever appears while you fly... well, at least not on those flights I took…

A flight attendant in Malaysia Airlines not only have to look pretty (and smart), they are also equipped with very important knowledge during those emergency situations. I mean, do most of us really know what hypoglycemic means? Do you know how to treat it? More importantly, can you tell from seeing someone that he/she is showing symptoms of hypoglycemia? And how do you treat a hypoglycemic in a coma, effectively?

we gate-crashed a refresher course... and happily took photos
of the first aid session. all of them were evaluated strictly since there
is no way they could gamble away human life in the air.

- photo taken from Khairul Sufi's collection on facebook

The ladies who don the tight-fitting kebaya could also apprehend rowdy passengers, and they’re taught to handle critical situations like terrorism/hijacking. What’s more, just imagine them saving your life while being thrown at sea, in their kebaya. Haha… I know it may seem like a beautiful sight until you know what it’s like to be in the water, trying to swim to safety into the raft… I tried that in my previous safety training and trust me, in deep sea, salty water and those huge waves, it ain’t easy getting to safety… it is difficult enough doing it in those calm water of the swimming pool.

imagine having to get uncomfortably wet in tight kebayas

In this sense, I guess you should realise that nothing’s ever easy in life… you may think a career looks simple (although this one has its perks, eh?), easy and glamorous but everything always has its pros and cons.

At the end of the session, all of us emerged with a different outlook, but the same fascination of the cabin crew in uniform :D

I would like to thank Malaysia Airlines, especially the Media Relations and Training department for having us all there and showing us true Malaysian Hospitality.

They have many more contests updated regularly on their page in facebook. I regretted adding them as a fan a tad late as I missed ‘the Great Escapade’ by a few minutes. Otherwise, I am confident that little jj’s ranting on our trip to London could at least get noticed… ‘she’d’ just have to add another paragraph on which Stimulus Package would be perfect for us ;P. Oh well…

But you don’t need to miss out on anything. Just click on the icon of Malaysian Airlines Travel on facebook and become a fan. They have plenty of information to share with you with regards to travel tips, food excursions and many many contests. Who knows... even if you don't obtain anything in kind from Malaysia Airlines, you could just get that rare chance to make friends with perfect strangers, like we all did..... while experiencing something one could only dream of, like we all had... aha :D

It has been a good friday...

I had a really good chat with a former classmate today.

We had wanted to meet since before I gave birth to little jj but you know how it is with us busy ladies, things never worked out and we’ve never really set any dates anyways.

The last time we met was in 1992 at a reunion some time after our SPM… at that time, we didn’t chat that much because we seemed to be different people, with moi not quite ‘grown up’ in character and outlook. Well, I had always been overly protected by my parents and though I could communicate okay with people, I didn’t have that much social skills then. The little things we chatted then left me in awe of her as the last time I chatted with her was when we were classmates in Form 3. She then pursued her studies to a prominent all-girls’ residential school and I thought she had somewhat appear more outgoing with such an attractive persona unlike moi who still looked very innocent and gullible at 17.

We kinda lost touch after that and you can trust on social networks like facebook to ‘bump’ into your old friends again.

We got connected, chatted and promised to meet up when the time comes. The best part was seeing something in her profile that touched my heart and I guess we connected at a higher level because of that.

It has been 9 months after I had delivered little jj and today was a day I wasn’t gonna miss… I had a sudden morning agenda that came up at the last minute and thanks to the one, I was able to make it to lunch today, to meet one gutsy lady who has gone thru so much for love.

You’d always think you’re so unfortunate when something happens to you and one day, you will open your eyes wide when you realise that what you went thru was really just less than 50% of what another person goes thru in his/her life.

We managed to only catch up for a good 2 hours and I felt guilty about it since she had taken a day off from work just so she could catch up with me properly… I sincerely thought I was able to hang out for at least 3-4 hours with her and walk around the Curve to do some ‘exercise’ in the mall (hehe…) but little jj has started her weird cries (the one where no one else can make her stop but moi) and all I could do was excuse myself but promised (with hopes) that the next time will be better… it was a case of gambling with situation – either I brought little jj with me and have her cranky after around 1-1 ½ hours or leave her with daddy and she might get cranky after 2 hours or hold on until after 4 hours. The first, could still be managed by feeding her and continuing with whatever I was doing if she decides to sleep; the latter, was tried and tested with her lasting around 4 hours with daddy.

There were so many things to catch up after 17 years! I felt like there were so many things that I discovered of her but once I got into my car, I realised that there were so much more I needed to ask her, so much more I needed to tell her, and so much more I needed to speak about with her… 2 hours was waaay too short.

The best part was finding out so many similarities we have and I felt really good after that meeting with her.

A lot of us has such rosy outlook on life.............. until life disappoints you.

Well, it’s not to say that life is unfair to you… it’s how you view life, that would make all the difference to your day, your weeks, your months, your years, etc.

We grew up with so much expectations in life – where when I look at myself before, I thought I’d grow up with a good career (well, that went through, actually) with a good family and a happy home. But when it didn’t go the way I had hoped in my first marriage, do I give up with life, blame everyone else for my misery or do I pick up the pieces and walk with stride?

I’ve always told the one that in this life we live where things are going at fast speed and all of us having so many things in our heads all the time, I have no time to read minds… if one expects something from another, I expect one to tell me about it straight to the face, with brutal honesty if they may.

Give and you will receive, they say… but do you realise that the ‘receive’ part may not necessarily be in material… it could be just a simple satisfaction in you from doing something totally with a sincere heart, not expecting anything in return.

Don’t ever assume as well… like when I told this friend of mine that I may be in the Curve by 12 noon since I would be doing some shopping for the little munchkin’s birthday this Sunday but had to sms her later last night that some things came up at the last minute and I may only be able to reach the Curve around 2pm instead. I don’t assume her to be a-okay with it since we’ve planned this for awhile and it can be a little of a turn-off for me to suddenly say I’ll be late.

I’m glad, though, that she was so understanding about it. Guess that understanding comes with whatever one goes thru in life as well… if things has always been so easy, rosy and simple, one may not really understand why certain things do not turn out the way one have hoped.

Assumptions is the root of all evil, says the superbitch I was working with a long time ago… a line where none of her ex-staff will ever forget. She taught us how one shouldn’t simply assume things and to always check and re-confirm for affirmation. Yeah… despite her being a superbitch, she did teach us some really good lessons on how not to take things for granted.

Expectations, is also another root of all evil, I must say… This, I am saying with the exclusion of those where we pay money for services like for instance, this Celcom Broadband account that the one had recently registered for… you pay for the registration and all, and will be given those details of what you can expect out of them. So, that is out of the question.

I am talking about giving/doing something sincerely from your heart yet expect something in return, without the other party even knowing about it. Pretty frustrating, don’t you think?

We are all adults and we have brains to think. Life, to me, is pretty simple – do unto others if you want others do unto you.

My principles in life is relatively simple… I want something, I tell the one what I expect for say, my birthday… or our anniversary, whatever. I hate guessing games, and I don’t expect him to read my mind, either. If I had overlooked something, it may have been done unintentionally from issues that arise unexpectedly. If I had done something on purpose, I am not afraid to admit it.

While managing a team in my former employment, I clearly inform the execs what I expect from them throughout the year - the projects and responsibilities they will be undertaking, and I hold their hands until I know I can let go off them and trust them totally. Well, not totally... but you get my drift. Then, the evaluation can be objective, fair and everyone should be happy about it. My former staff are still appreciative of what I had done for them and I am happy at how they have developed throughout the years.

It's the same concept in one's personal life.

Be fair to yourself and considerate of others.

Just because you have a sudden show of inferiority complex and high insecurities in you, do not, at any time, pull others with you.

Be fair to yourself and considerate of others.

I’ve been with someone who was highly insecure of himself. He pulled me down with him and I didn’t even notice it until the day I said goodbye to his mental and emotional torture. In the end, friends told me that they thought it was me who had the negative aura… no one saw it in him until he was on his own.

I know everybody’s got problems in life… it’s not that you can’t dwell on your insecurities and shortcomings… everyone needs that ‘mourning’ time… a time where you’d want to just be sad or lazy… but there will come a time when friends get tired of it and everyone needs to be with people with positive energy… one with a positive outlook in life – that no matter what comes, we’d do it together – with your loved ones holding your hands, and your friends to have your back. At all times.

When you expect something from someone, do tell it straight to their face… don’t expect to forward someone some comment forms at the office, assuming your friends will say only good things about you.

Don’t expect anything in return for that favour your volunteered to contribute because the other party could just be as calculative with whatever they’ve contributed in the past… any small things can seem so big by the individual. Sometimes it is just minute as compared to what the other party has done without asking for anything in return and such negative aura can be felt from miles away.

Be fair to yourself and considerate of others.

Sincerity should be treated with the strictest hint of caution. But as far as I am concerned, I do not have any agenda up my sleeves. And I am glad that the people surrounding me has such positive energy as well, so much so, that it made me feel so much better after everything.

Thanks, Mel, for such a good time. It’s wonderful to be in touch with you again and hoping that there’ll be more sessions…

P/S: I was surprised at winning a contest by MAS, but that will be an entry on its own. Soon, ya.

Post-vacay.

I have been extremely lazy with my updates. Since returning from our vacation, there has been way too many things to document and I just don’t know where to start…

All I can say is that the vacation was a much overdue one for me… my last break was in November 2007 when I was already in my very early pregnancy and didn’t even know it. From then on, it was work, work and work for me non-stop as compared to my usual habit of taking a short break twice a year from work.

I was afraid about the flight to London since I was all on my own… but my worries were unfounded as little jj behaved extremely well… of course, there would be those restless moments here and there, I mean who wouldn’t, right? Even an adult wouldn’t be able to sit still for a full 12 ½ hours flight. But she was alright… she slept when she’s supposed to, played on her own in her bassinet, sat in the bassinet nicely while I fed her the 2 meals given on board… and best of all, she let me ate peacefully when my meal came. There were not much interruptions from her except during those times she was awfully restless and I had to play Toy Story on the in-flight screen over and over again just so that she could focus on something instead of crying for no apparent reason.

The English lady sitting next to me praised at how well she behaved as compared to another baby further in front of us who wouldn’t stop crying at many intervals.

But, if you were to ask me to do it again, I might hesitate… I wouldn’t be twice lucky and I think that belief may be true since little jj gave us a whole lotta nightmare during the flight home… it was either that her daddy was present and she knew there was an extra set of hands to take care of her, or she was very insecure with the darkness throughout the flight (as the flight home was a night flight). She barely slept 2 hours in 2 occasions, but that was also contributed by that drug we got from her paediatrician for her to relax during the long haul flight. So, basically, all throughout the balance of 10 hours when she's awake, I could clearly hear her crying and screaming in daddy’s arms while all I could do was to get better quick - I fell sick immediately as I board the plane and my body temperature shot up in an instant. Everytime I felt better, I took her away from daddy and all she wanted to do was to hold on to me.

It was truly very tiring.

little jj's bad hair day - 10hours of crying, screaming and struggling
while sweating profusely once we touched down at KLIA

But, despite her usual nature of not trusting strangers and unfamiliar environment, she warmed up instantly to London’s cold air, was at ease at Eju & Muzzie’s (thank you, Eju and Muz!!... we can't thank you guys enough for that warm hospitality...) and allowed us to toughen her up by taking her out almost an entire day, every day thru the entire week of our stay… I fed her where ever we decide to take a rest from our journeys that she has somehow gotten used to being fed out of the comfort of her home instead of every time wanting her usual chair and that familiar environment at home.

little jj and abang noah, warming up with the battle
of the pacifier, just after we reached their home.

I guess that vacation somehow wasn’t just a good one for me but brought out the best in her as well.

For more details on our vacation, I would rather let little jj update her blog, yah ;D soon… she says ;P (update: little jj has updated her blog)

When we got home, I got busy with unpacking and doing the laundry in so many batches… there were those of the one’s from the pile at home, those from the trip, my clothes, little jj’s worn clothes and little jj’s new clothes. I practically only managed to finish everything in 4 days! It helped a lot that my parents were kind enough to volunteer taking care of the little munchkin that day we arrived so that we could all get our rest.

Then, there was cooking for little jj as her puree stock has either depleted or expired and so I turned to Annabel Karmel again for the next phase of puree recipes – 9-12 months.

As we all recovered from jet lag (with little jj affected the worst), I could only prepare them purees after 10pm with only 2 days to whip up her food as the home made chicken stock could only last for 48 hours in the fridge. With jet lag, and a baby who’s cranky all the time, coupled with bags and stuff strewn on the floor of our living room, cooking 2-3 types of food after 10pm was a chore for me. But, we’ve all lost weight from the amount of walking that we’ve done, and I just had to take that step so that we could stuff little jj back to her normal baby fatness (eheh!).

So… as you’re all always eager to see what I whipped for little jj, enjoy the photos….

First, there was that 'First spaghetti Bolognese' which I didn't manage to take any pictures since it was already after midnight when it was ready and I was dead tired. I only made one meal the first day due to tiredness...

More to be made this week - which entails fish and lotsa vege...

This week has been a truly hectic one after such a remarkable time away with my soulmate… he’s just flown back to London this morning for another official meeting and I only wished I was able to stay back in London for another week and return home with him next Thursday. But, we all have our roles to play and one cannot be too dependent on something or someone.

That also came with the realisation of how things are really not permanent in life… one small step that looks so harmless could change a situation forever, if not for a long duration.

We all do what we could do and would have to be wary of our surroundings. That way, we do not take things for granted and hurt those we care about unintentionally. I guess sincerity should always be taken with a strict hint of caution and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly… I’ve always avoid being presumptuous in the many things I do but thru the journey, there will always bound to be mistakes. In the end, we either learn from that mistake and hope it will not repeat, or if we do not learn from it, repeat and face the consequences.

Life is too short to sweat about the little things. But for one who can be a perfectionist, we thrive for every little details. Sometimes, our details may not hit the notes of another person’s details so what should the outcome be, then?

Circumstances may sometimes blur the vision, preventing us from seeing clearly. In the end, I think some of my principles in life would definitely make me conscience free – to not rely on others and do what you must do for yourself even if that meant having to go thru trying times/suffer on your own… at least you know you don’t owe it to anyone but yourself... you'll come out a winner because you made it on your own and you don't need anyone to make you feel guilty since there are no reasons to pin you down. In that space of time, you could turn so arrogant for you are strong and powerful and I only hope that I don't forget to think before I act on something, if ever, I am in that position.

Oh well, life's like that... we learn, we move on, we fall, we get back up... and hope that the injury won't be so bad. But even then, we hope that the injury will heal quickly and the scars will remind us of what we did or what we didn't do. Reflect, and learn.

my little cookie in the jar... a tough cookie indeed.

Thou Shalt Not Touch...

just a brief post while taking a break from my editing job...

I seriously think there should be a clear written rule that one shall not touch a stranger's baby, out of one's whims and fancies.

The one and I, were doing grocery shopping at Giant's yesterday and while walking towards the exit, this one woman (who looked like a sales person waiting to hand out flyers or so) suddenly held out one hand, wanting to pinch or hold little jj immediately after her eyes caught our precious darling.

Hey, I get it when someone is so baby-friendly. The one is one of them... he can never focus on any conversations with me when there's a baby nearby. He'd make funny faces, wave his beautiful fingers (hiks!) to the infant or toddler and make him/her laugh. But, never have I seen him charge towards any babies so that he could touch them.

I think that no matter how much we love looking at cute little darlings, I don't think it is polite for you to just walk over and put your dirty hands on babies, who are well known to be quite sensitive to bad vibes, negative energy and especially, cleanliness. I don't know where you were from, how many hands you've touched and even those flyers that came from the print machines contain bacteria. Note: mother cat and her claws ;D

Even close friends would ask for permission to hold another friend's baby... and even then, friends would always be sensitive enough to know that they need to be clean before touching someone else's baby by washing their hands, at their very least.

Seriously. We were put off by that gesture.

Review: Nursing/Baby rooms in shopping malls

So… we were at the doctors on Sunday morning for little jj’s next 6-in-1 jap. Everything went well and she weighs a nice 7.9 kilos, slightly at an above average growth. Since the last 4 months of our visit to Dr Lee, he said that little jj has been growing at an average 1 inch (length) per month and he estimates that she will be somewhere around 9 kilos ++ by the time she reaches 1 year of age… this, coming from a doctor who estimated so accurately that the little munchkin would reach my height when he turns 9 (the time of estimation was during his 1 month-old jap! Imagine…).

Overall, since little jj is breastfed, Dr Lee mentioned that she won’t be considered overweight even if she reaches 12 kilos at her 1st birthday. Amazing, isn’t it?

Talking about breasfeeding, I’ve been long since keeping some stuff for a review of nursing/baby rooms in major shopping centres around the Klang Valley. Opps… but this will exclude KLCC, Pavillion, Lot 10 and Starhill as madame toughcookie has not been around those places since the birth of little jj, partly because there is nothing there that I can’t get elsewhere and also due to the fact that madame thinks it is a little too far-offish with bad traffic.

Ok, the toughcookie is a little tough in her review because she has a sticky baby who not only prefer to starve than be fed in a cold and unfamiliar environment, but also dislikes crammy places with crying babies as the cries is considered infectious. So here goes…

1. Sunway Pyramid

What I love about this shopping centre is their consideration towards us mommies and our breastfed babies. Why??... because their baby rooms are located at almost every toilet stops and at every level. Therefore, when your baby gets hungry (on demand feeding), you don’t have to scramble your way to look for the rooms, you just need to walk to your nearest toilet stop and there it is…

Toughcookie likes:
  • Just one press of a button and the entrance door automatically opens – promoting hygiene whereby there’s no need to touch the door knob; a good safety measure as kids on tow will not be able to play with the door since the switch is too high for a child to reach; easy on mommies alone with their baby as she can push the stroller, push the button and door opens without the hassle of pushing your way through the door, holding it while pulling the baby stroller through it.
  • Spacious area with long and wide counter-top with large sink, soap & baby shampoo dispenser and water dispenser (to make that bottle of milk)
  • A small play area for your other little kids on tow.
  • A nice small room to nurse your baby in private (with own lockable door)
  • A long bench for mommies to sit while waiting or even to nurse baby in the open.
  • The wide counter-top and waiting bench could also be used to change your babies if the changing-table is being used.
  • Room is large enough to accommodate mommies, babies and 2-3 strollers.
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • The diaper-changing area comes only in those tables attached to the wall (where you’d need to pull it down). There is only ONE table and it’s hygiene questionable. The table is not wide enough for you to place baby’s toiletries like diaper cream or wet tissues thus, someone must be able to help you out unless baby is very relaxed on the hard, uncomfortable table.
  • The nursing room comes only in 1 unit… and since it is a room on its own, how do you know that the person locked in it is not the cleaning lady sleeping?
  • The room is so clearly lit and not a relaxing environment for both mommy and baby during feeding.
  • The air-condition is super duper cold, unfriendly to babies who always seeks warmth and comfort, and I don’t see the use of baby soap and shampoo with such a cold temperature in the room (how do you bathe a baby in the cold?)

OVERALL VERDICT – 4 cookies from toughcookie, for comfort, cleanliness and accessibility.

2. Mid Valley
For a shopping mall that claims itself as the longest shopping mall in Asia, this must be the worst modern shopping mall. Why do I say that? Well… for its 5km length, you would struggle with a hungry baby while looking for the reception counter at one end, the receptionist telling you that there are only 2 nursing rooms – 1 in Jusco and 1 in Carrefour. We were at Kenny Rogers and the walk was extremely frustrating.

The nearest stop was supposedly at Carrefour’s. However, I was shocked that it was situated so much further towards the other wing. Thank god we were at the same floor. If you were elsewhere in the mall, I’d say, good luck to you.

Toughcookie likes: (Carrefour’s nursing room)
  • Nothing.
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • There wasn’t any air-conditioning nor was there any ventilation! It was so warm that not only madame dearest was sweating from the long frustrating walk, little jj was sweating from the many discomfort upon entering the small room.
  • The room reeks of the smell of urine (I don’t know why – was there no proper bin for diapers? Was there nobody to attend to the cleanliness of the room? Or was it due to the lack of air ventilation?)
I sat at the couch in the room (while another mommy was behind the curtain, feeding her baby) trying to make little jj compromise on the situation as she was hungry. But, being a baby, compromising may not be something she is willing to give. Hence, loud shrilling cry made madame toughcookie leave the room in search for other options whilst at the same time, cursing Carrefour for providing such low standards of cleanliness and hygiene in their baby room.

Toughcookie likes: (Jusco’s nursing room)
  • Clean, neat area.
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • Room is an open space just next to the ladies’ room. Hence, you can imagine the stench coming from next door.
  • No proper signage.
  • Little jj was all angry from being hungry and no amount of coaxing can make her drink from mommy’s ample bosoms, especially when ladies coming out of the ladies’ room, all took a peep at us, wondering what the hell is mommy doing not pacifying her baby.
OVERALL VERDICT:
Carrefour - 0 cookie from toughcookie for the horrible stench, heaty room, unhygienic room, poor directional signage and poor location.
Jusco - 2 cookies from toughcookie for the stench coming from next door ladies' room, its 'open' concept allowing people to look in and inconsiderate location.
Mid Valley - 0 cookie awarded for such lack of community service in providing a comfortable and clean baby room for such a lengthy walk across the huge mall. They should at least provide an area at every toilet stops, with an attendant to see through the cleanliness of the rooms. Although they claimed they have appointed baby rooms in their website, their receptionists are saying otherwise.

3. 1 Utama
The first time we visited 1 Utama was when little jj just turned 2 months old. Therefore, she wasn’t that choosy or cranky in public as she slept most of the time. Furthermore, there is something about 1 Utama that everytime we come here to shop, she would be at her best behaviour.

Since our first visit was spent mostly at the old wing, we visited the nursing room in Jusco’s Children Department, Level 1. The room is large – with 2 changing tables, a couch at the entrance, and a few sections of the room fitted with curtains for mommies to breastfeed their babies in private.

Toughcookie likes:
  • None
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • The nursing room is just next to a storage area. Box cartons are arranged so close to the room, making it look like part of a storage room.
  • The box cartons are dusty – influences the air babies breathe
  • The changing tables have a piece of changing mat on them that looks barely clean (a dad who came in to change his daughter was also apalled at how unhygienic the table is but quickly did his job after laying their own changing mat on top of the existing mat).
  • The curtains for breastfeeding area show signs of wear and tear and I wonder how often do they send them for laundry.
In the end, I fed little jj hastily on the drabby couch at the entrance.

Recently (about 2-3 weeks ago), I discovered another nursing area at the new wing, in Parkson.

luxurious and safe finishing - the walls are practically covered with
thick purple cushion-like material all over...

Toughcookie likes:
  • The dim lighting – so relaxing for mommy and baby.
  • The really large nursing rooms (there are 2, with curtains), with wide comfortable and cushioned bench. It's relatively spacious that you could even bring in your stroller.
  • The individual nursing rooms allow complete privacy for mommy and baby.
  • The entire walls are safe and secure as they are fitted with cushion-like materials.
  • The colour of the area is a luxurious purple, very soothing to the eye.
  • There are three changing tables, all decked with clean changing mats and a large bin to deposit those dirty diapers.
  • The air-conditioning is just right.
  • There would always be someone attending to the area, to ensure its cleanliness and comfort.
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • The changing table is horizontal – making it slightly difficult for diaper-change and parking of stroller.
  • The changing table is not that wide for baby’s toiletries. Hence, you’d need to be super efficient, or your baby would need to help you hold the wet tissues ;)
  • Location – it is too far off if you’re shopping around the old wing.
OVERALL VERDICT:
Jusco - 1 cookie from toughcookie as it compromises on cleanliness and hygiene, an utmost important factor when it comes to babies.
Parkson - 5 cookies from toughcookie for its comfort (little jj totally loves it!), cleanliness, ambience, lighting, air-conditioning and spacious nursing area.

01/02/2009 - Share on Ovi
there was really no problems breastfeeding and changing her here.
look at how happy she looks!

1 Utama - 2 cookies from toughcookie. For such a reputable shopping mall with thousands of visitors daily, it is clearly unacceptable that there are only 2 nursing rooms in their main tenants. Bandar Utama developer should also shoulder the responsibility to give back to their loyal shoppers and have more nursing rooms throughout the levels, and every few areas.

4. Ikea
For a shopping centre that sells furniture and home furnishings, we would only expect them to have the best looking nursing rooms. And best of all, from all the websites of our favourite shopping centres, Ikea is the only mall that mentions the location of their nursing room in their website.

Toughcookie likes:
  • The way their furniture is put to the test.
  • There are 2 changing tables with their spongy-airy changing mat and a pull-over large newsprint-like disposable material for use over the changing mat – ensuring hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Table is vertical – eases diaper-change.
  • Room is dimly lit, cosy and allows the right amount of air-conditioning.
  • Curtain to cover mommy breastfeeding her baby.
  • Location of nursing room is in the centre of everything and at both levels – if you are familiar with the floor layout, it is very easy to make your way through short-cuts to arrive there quickly.
  • The room is clean and dry.
Toughcookie dislikes:
  • Only ONE one-seater sofa for breastfeeding. So, once when there was another mommy feeding her baby, I laid little jj horizontally on the changing table and fed her standing up (go imagine yourself).
  • The room can be pretty crampy when full (imagine daddies also coming in with strollers) – only a max of 1 stroller can fit in the room, and the mommy sitting on the one-seater will face direct another mom’s bottom, who’s doing diaper-change.

top pix: see the huge toilet-tissue-like roll just above the changing mat.
they're so useful in maintaining a clean and comfy changing area.
bottom pix: see how cramped the area looks and just one small
one-seater for one mommy at a time... but thumbs up for the curtain.

OVERALL VERDICT – 4 cookies from toughcookie, especially for the extra effort in providing the disposable large-sized tissue to cover the changing mat, the clever locations of the nursing room, comfort and hygiene.

Overall, Malaysia is not really a country that's breastfeeding-friendly no matter how much our local hospitals and our government promote breastfeeding.

I remembered those days (years and years ago) when women were strongly encouraged to breastfeed their young and emphasis was put to employers to provide nurseries in their workplace so that women can play their part for the benefit of their babies whilst at the same time contribute to the country’s economy.

Nowadays, even corporations who used to provide day care for their employees’ children no longer run such establishments. I can name a few but I don’t think I should.

The large shopping centres are not doing much in support for breasfeeding either. I'm not sure if this issue has been highlighted before...

Do women who breastfeed are considered a minority group, insignificant for such a big change in our shopping environment?

Do most women who breastfeed carry their milk in a bottle whilst shopping therefore making it easier for their babies to just drink from the bottle in the comfort of their baby strollers?

Or do women who breastfeed only stay at home and not shop?

Apart from the wondrous health benefits for mommy and baby, I breastfeed my baby because it is economical, it is clearly hygienic as there’s no need to sterilise bottles, it is safe as there’s no need to check the temperature of milk, I am able to save time on milk preparation (and lesser amount of baby crying due to speedier response time) and I carry less items in the diaper bag.

But this is not just about breasfeeding. Baby-changing needs a clean environment as well. So far, only 3 shopping locations passed little jj's standard of cleanliness - Ikea, Sunway Pyramid and Parkson 1 Utama.

My vote:
Most baby-friendly shopping centre
- Sunway Pyramid wins hands down for the numerous babyrooms at every floor, and almost all toilet stops.
Best baby room - Parkson 1 Utama

*1 cookie - very low quality
*2 cookies - low quality
*3 cookies - not bad, but not very good either
*4 cookies - quite okay with room for improvement
*5 cookies - perfect score! with little jj totally at ease.
